WhatsApp might have led you to believe that SMS (or texts) is on the verge of extinction. This might be partly true in the developed world, where access to internet on your phone is almost omnipresent (these apps need internet to communicate, in case you didn’t know). But in the developing world (which is most of the world), text messaging still plays a vital role in most of cell phone users’ day to day lives. For a long time I’ve been hooked to the Go SMS app on my Android. It has helped me a great deal with not only its basic messaging functionalities, but also the added features like privacy box and scheduling SMS. It has really dictated how I manage texts on my device. I’ve loved it, but being the geek that I am, I’ve also been yearning for a change. I wanted a tab-based, swipe gesture supporting app to manage the messages on my Android which offered features similar to that of Go SMS. There are many apps on the Play Store that fulfill some of that criteria, but only one seemed to have everything. It’s a new and promising messaging app for Android called EvolveSMS. And it was the perfect answer for all I was looking for.

Before getting started, make sure you’ve installed it. The first time you launch the app after installing it, it will give you the option to archive the old messages that you have in your inbox. The app has an archiving feature of it’s own using which it stores all the old messages in a separate database so that it doesn’t have to load it every time it’s initialized, thus making the app faster when compared to others. The first thing you will notice is the beautiful layout of the app. The app will automatically open the first SMS thread in the list of conversation and you can swipe right to open the entire list. The user just needs to tap on the conversation to make a switch. Like other such tools, the list begins at last received/sent SMS and the last recipient you interacted with remains on the top. To send a new message, just slide the contact tab to the right and tap the new message icon. One thing I like about the app is the ability to search through the messages. Just tap on the search button and type in your query. The app will search through all the tabs and also return any partial matches if found.

Let’s now have a look at the various features the app provides in the settings. However, you should know that not all the features are not available in the free version. The app gives in-app purchase option to activate the advanced features. The theme pack is available for $0.99, while the advanced features are available for $1.49. The users can increase the text size of the messages to improve the readability. The app also supports pop-up notifications and custom vibration and ringtone alerts. While the app also provides some security settings, the option to set individual conversations as private is only available after purchasing the feature packs. For free users, however, there is an option to put all the messages under pattern protection for free. The app also comes with backup and restore feature along with the archive feature we discussed. All these features can be accessed from the Advanced Settings tab.

All in all, EvolveSMS is a promising alternative to the stock messaging app. The app is new and is updated very frequently by the developer to make it even better day after day.
